Sometime around July 15, 1904, Kitt Bookard, of Berkeley County, South
Carolina was murdered by a mob. His mutilated body was found floating in
the Santee River, his hands bound with rope. He had been jailed for
arguing with a young white man. He was forcibly carried away by a mob
that broke into the jail.
