Frank Embree
Fayette, Missouri
July 22, 1899
Frank Embree was lynched in Fayette, Missouri. He had
knife wounds slashed on his backside. He is paraded nude to his
hanging. His stance and glare of defiance are was caught by the
camera at this spectacle. Outnumbered and handcuffed he covered his
genitals. Whelts, gashes and holes pockmark his body front and back as
men were all too eager to be part of the photographic occasion. The
hanging portrays him draped from the waist down.
