Augustus Goodman
Bainbridge, Georgia
November 4, 1905
In Bainbridge, Georgia, Augustus Goodman wan hung from an oak
that served as a community bulletin board. He was alleged to have
murdered Sheriff Stegall, then he was dragged through town by a mob and hanged. An
interesting account from the Georgia archives lists eight Decatur County
African American lynchings during this period. A Black man Tok Seabwright was
lynched by a mob of Blacks for the assault of two Black girls. The mob took him from county
officials and lynched him and riddled his body with bullets.
