Eli Hilson, a farmer in Lincoln County, Mississippi, was murdered because he did not limit his aspirations to laboring for whites. His independence was unacceptable to "whitecaps".  He was warned to leave town, but remained on his place. He was assassinated while on the way home from town alone in his buggy.
