John Richards
Goldsboro, North Carolina
January 12, 1916
Mr. Richards was dragged from his cell by a masked crowd of two hundred
for the alleged murder of a local farmer, Anderson Gurley. The crowd
took him to the crime scene where he was hanged. The photo shows him suspended from a tree by a rope under his
arms and around his chest. His lower body is draped to cover a
possible castration. His body was riddled with bullets that "almost
cut his body to pieces."
