Bennie Simmons
Anadarko, Oklahoma
June 13, 1913
Bennie Simmons, (Dennis Simmons), was accused of the murder of 16
year old, Susie Church. While in custody of prison guards in Anadarko,
Oklahoma, a mob seized him and took him to a nearby bridge. He was hung
from a limb of a cottonwood tree by the stream. His body was doused in
coal oil and set afire. A local newspaper reported, "The
Negro prayed and shrieked in agony as the flames reached his flesh, but his cries were drowned out by yells and
jeers of the mob. "As Mr. Simmons began to lose consciousness,
the mob fired at him, cutting his body to pieces. Another newspaper reported,
"The mobsters made no attempt to conceal their identity...but
there were no prosecutions."
