Ted Smith
Greenville, Texas
July 28, 1908
Remaining photo- history postcards read, "
The Burning of the Negro Smith". Eighteen year old Ted Smith was
accused of assaulting a white woman, Viola Delancey. The case never got to court nor
were charges formally introduced. The young man was slowly roasted alive on
the town streets while the mob tended the fire throughout the day. The chief of police
stated that, "Special occasions occur where the people take the law into
their own hands and pass judgment and punish accordingly."
